We are on the same boat

Siamo sulla stessa barca | Lampedusa 30 Sept. – 3.Oct 2021

This year the Lampedusa project Siamo sulla stessa barca (We are on the same boat), promoted by Italian teacher Ernestina Meloni, was able to go ahead and the Lycée Francais Charles de Gaulle de Londres took part as UK representative together with its partner school Istituto Ettore Majorana of Gela (Italia). Unfortunately, due to the health situation, no LFCG student was allowed to take part in it as in an organised school trip.

This event is the biggest European gathering of schools on the theme of migrations. It brings to the island of Lampedusa students and teachers from all over Europe together with the survivors and the families of the victims of the shipwrecks in the Mediterranean. This year was the eighth “Day of Remembrance and Reception” in commemoration of the tragedy that took place on 3rd October 2013 when 368 died off the coasts of Lampedusa. Since then, the Comitato tre ottobre has been working with Italian and European schools to build new concepts of immigration, create memory and awareness, support inclusion and reception policies as well as a victim’s DNA database. This initiative is sponsored by the MIUR (Italian Ministry of University Research) and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the support of the European Commission.

From 30th September to 3rd October 2021, 355 young people and their teachers from 45 schools (23 Italian and 22 other European schools) gathered on the island of Lampedusa and took part in workshops and talks. They met with survivors, victims’ relatives and EU parliament members and representatives of many NGOs (Save the children, Unicef, Doctors Without Borders, Red Cross, UNHCR, Italian Coast Guards, and many other organisations). During these four days of workshops and activities, rescuing human lives is the number one priority.

The project aims to strengthen the awareness and knowledge of school age young people on the topics of global interdependence, human rights and cultural integration, as well as the reception of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers.

Comitato 3 ottobre wants to promote learning opportunities for European younger generations, with a view to intercultural education, to foster a culture of acceptance and solidarity in order to counter intolerance, racism and discrimination whilst promoting processes of inclusion and social integration for migrants.

Among European schools attending, there were schools from France, Portugal, Spain, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Denmark, Austria etc.
