Project Seeds of Lampedusa - We are on the same boat

Continuing with this project started in 2019, Mrs Meloni, her Italian-learning pupils and the whole Lycée have been taking part in amazing encounters with NGO representatives, participants in Semi di Lampedusa 2021 and refugees witnessing on their experience. The whole project aims at raising awareness among the youth about immigration, inclusion and the situation of refugees and asylum seekers as they arrive in Europe through the small island of Lampedusa (part of Sicily).

Tareke Brhane - President of the Comitato tre Ottobre (named after the tragedy of 368 victims drowning off the coast of Lampedusa on 3rd October 2013) came to the Lycée and met with 5e and 1e pupils last Friday to tell them about his long journey from Eritrea to Italy and his work at the Committee.

Tareke came back to the Lycée on Monday for a more formal conference in the Salle Iselin, along with other guests and in videolink with our sister school in Gela (Italy). This event is part of Earth Week's programme as all the issues it addresses are included in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Introduced and welcomed by Mrs Meloni, Mr Devilard (Headmaster) and Mr Leridon (Deputy Head), the other guests were:

Annalisa Brusati, Senior Technical Advisor for Child Protection at International Rescue Committee came from Oxford, instead of joining through videoconferencing. She explained what her organisation does and how it is involved in the project.

An LFCG’s photocopy department staff member, Eritrean himself, having connected Mrs Meloni with Petros Testagherghis, the founder of Eritrean Refugee Support Association, Mr Testagherghis also shared his experience and work with the audience.

Marcello R., Terminale pupil who accompanied Mrs Meloni to Lampedusa last fall, shared his newly acquired knowledge on the topic of immigration and described the workshops he took part in, and how the whole trip made him view immigrants differently from before.

Pupils and teachers in the room were also remotely connected with Dott.ssa Linda Bentivegna (Headmistress) and Sonia Madonia (teacher) as well as her pupils from the school I.I.S.S. Ettore Majorana di Gela (Sicilia).

In addition to thanking the honourable guests for their precious time and enlightening testimonies, Mrs Meloni wishes to particularly thank Marcello R. for his testimony as well as her 1e pupils for their amazing contribution during the past few days at the Lycée as well as at the Italian Institute. They particularly helped with photos, graphic design, light & sound, translation, reception etc.:

Isabelle A. T.; Tatiana A. Z.; Juliette B.; Elias B.; Clara B.; Chiara F.; Chiara Fos.; Elsa Rose G.; Elsa M.; Alessio M.; who all dream of one day following Marcello's steps and attend the event on site, in Lampedusa.
