At the European Parliament

At the European Parliament

On Tuesday 31st May, the LFCG was invited to the European Parliament, as UK representative, to take part in a conference together with over 60 students from 15 Italian and European schools in Brussels.

The initiative organised by the “Comitato tre ottobre”, is the result of the activities carried out every year in Lampedusa on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance and Reception when hundreds of students gather in Lampedusa to meet men and women who survived the shipwrecks in the Mediterranean together with the organisations that operate on the field to speak about reception and immigration.

A small group of students has been selected to take part in a round table and among them our student from Terminale, Marcello R. (T°4). The four students asked questions about “Are we on the same boat?” The discussion was about the double standard in Europe's treatment of asylum seekers. Each student presented questions to the members of the Communitarian Institutions and representatives of important realities in the field of human rights and immigration.

In Brussels, the student delegation had the opportunity to present the European Institutions with their thoughts and considerations on the phenomenon of immigration based on the latests events in Europe and their experience during this past year. One of the main aims of the Comitato tre ottobre is to create awareness in the new generations on the themes of immigrations and reception, making them participants in the creation of an inclusive society, respectful of everyone's human rights.

Now our students' voice has reached the European Parliament and we hope to give this unique opportunity to many more students in the future.
