Position to be filled: 1st September 2023

Role: Senior School Health and Safety Officer with overall responsibility for H&S across both the Lycee and the London area annex primary schools.

Accountable to deliver the Health and Safety performance and compliance to all applicable standards and Laws. The position covers the Lycee Français Charles de Gaulle main site as well as all the London based annex primary schools.

The Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle ( LFCG) is an all through (3-18 years old) school, comprising four primary schools and one secondary school spread over four sites. Current enrolment figure stands at 3500 pupils.

Accountable to build and maintain an effective H&S management system as well as the associated governance, the role will report to the Headmaster, the successful candidate will chair the quarterly H&S Committee and will have frequent interactions with the Lycee Francais Charles de Gaulle senior management.

Main duties:

  • Inspects the premises to identify safety, health, and environmental risks
  • Author and maintain the LFCG risk register, including risk evaluation and risk priority Number calculation before and after mitigation / CAPA (Corrective Actions and Preventative actions)
  • Develop relevant risk assessments in cooperation with LFCG staff , promote safety initiatives, manage training matrix and organize training sessions either via E-learning modules on the school’s Citation safety package, toolbox talks or externally
  • Develop and implement in house inspection policies and procedures, and a schedule of routine inspections. Draft inspection reports to document inspection findings
  • Develop health and safety procedures and checklists as and when necessary
  • Prepare and schedule training to cover emergency procedures, workplace safety, and other relevant topics
  • Monitor compliance with safety procedures
  • Ensure that all H&S registers are maintained, readily accessible when needed and that statutory control documentation is consistently recorded
  • Investigates accidents, near miss and dangerous occurences, report findings and actions taken to the senior management and to the appropriate bodies when necessary
  • Maintain records of discharge or potential employee exposure to hazardous substances/pollutants as required
  • Implement the relevant Health & Safety governance including the quarterly H&S committee
  • Act as primary point of contact with all relevant external authorities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications and experiences:

  • A Degree/diploma in Environmental Health and Registration by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health
  • Significant and wide-ranging post qualification experience working in Environmental Health; including carrying out inspections and investigations in accordance with statutory requirements, guidance and internal procedures
  • Experience of working successfully in large teams
  • Experience within the Education sector appreciated

Skills, knowledge and personal qualities:

  • Authoritative knowledge and understanding of Environmental Health in particular Food Safety and Health & Safety enforcement
  • Excellent knowledge of relevant legislation, codes of practices and other technical guidance relevant to the role and business sector
  • Experience in developing productive and collaborative working relationships with colleagues and a range of stakeholders
  • Excellent written and oral communication, negotiating and influencing skills. Strong collaboration and presentation skills to relate effectively to employees, managers, members, the public and stakeholders and command their respect, trust and confidence.
  • The ability to converse at ease with external partners and provide advice in accurate spoken English
  • Ability to produce correspondence, notices and reports and to make recommendations under relevant legislation. Including where necessary the ability to give evidence in enquiries, tribunals and legal proceedings
  • Experience leading the delivery of projects and/or programmes, demonstrating project management skills
  • Strong level of digital literacy, including office software suites
  • Ability to plan and prioritise to produce a high level of work, within agreed timescales and to quality standards
  • Good command of French desirable but not essential

Working hours per year: 40 weeks per year (1,600h annually)

Monthly gross salary and benefits:

  • From £ 45 000 per annum including all allowances
  • Employer contribution to private healthcare
  • 15% employer contribution to private pension
  • 60 days holiday per annum
