The Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle wishes to recruit a LEAD SCIENCE TECHNICIAN – full time position – start date 01.09.2021
Reporting to the Deputy Bursar and Department coordinators as Line Managers, the Lead technician will provide support to the delivery of Science lessons in a well-resourced and efficient environment with due regard to the health and safety of all pupils and members of staff.
He/she will lead and coordinate the work of the Science technical team ensuring suitable laboratory equipment is available, adequately maintained and appropriately used as well as making sure that good working practices are implemented by promoting a safe working environment. He/she may also assist in experiment set-up/clearing and provide specialist technical and administrative support to the department.
Main duties
- Coordinate the work of the technicians and assistants on a weekly basis to ensure the team is adequately resourced, organised and developed to meet the performance standards required by the Science department
- Liaise with the Coordinators whenever necessary to address any issue with the practical works’ calendar and related requests
- Monitor the preparation and clearing of equipment for practical science each week
- Ensure that the laboratory facilities are maintained in a clean, functional and safe state, reporting any problems through the appropriate channels
- Carry out regulatory checks and maintenance of lab’s equipment in cooperation with the team and the site Facilities manager when external contractors are involved
- Supervise waste disposal including hazardous wastes transfer while ensuring regulations and guidelines are adhered to.
- Be responsible for inventory, organise stock takings, monitoring and maintaining appropriate stock levels of chemicals and equipment (consumables, stationery, etc.), Oversee reception and correct storage of consumables and materials
- Provide administrative support to the Department Coordinators, helping with purchase orders preparation and taking part to department meetings as directed by line management
- Assist the coordinators with appraisals and assess future development plans for technicians
- A key part in the role will be to conduct, update and review department related risk assessments with the support of line management and lead the implementation and review of H&S policies/practices. You will also have responsibility of maintaining all related H&S documentation to ensure compliance with HSE legislation.
Expected skills and knowledge
- The candidate must have a Science related degree ideally in Chemistry – additional qualification in Physics would be appreciated
- Must have a previous working experience within an educational laboratory setting
- Excellent team work capabilities and previous experience managing a team are essential
- It is important that you can demonstrate good organisational and planning skills as well as pro-active thinking
- You will need to be flexible and have previous knowledge of materials preparation, experiment preparation and equipment maintenance along with strict adherence to health and safety
- Keen interest in keeping up to date with current legislation and modern scientific laboratory practices
- Able to react knowledgeably in potentially hazardous situations
- Very good command of English is required (and French would be a plus)
- Computer literate/Windows/ G Suite
Working hours: 38 hours per week/1460 h per year
Gross monthly salary: £2,615.90 (incl. all allowances)
