AQA Syllabus: (A/S) 1202B and (A2) 6202B

Course content / description Art
Art at the Lycée is available at three levels designed to follow each other. Either as a creative activity of benefit in itself or as a qualification to add to University applications it proposes a creative outlet for all pupils in addition to other academic work.

GCE Art and Design
A/S Art (2 Units) Coursework 50 %, Exam 50%
Entry Codes: Fine Art ARTBI and ARTB2 (A/S Certification 1202B)
A/S Art continues the work started at GCSE and extends and deepens the activity of Drawing and Painting. There is one coursework unit and one 5-hour examination unit (taken  in early May). Each carries equal marks.

- Unit One (50%) is a Coursework portfolio and requires a depth of investigation of the skills involved such as Drawing, Structure and Form etc.
The second unit is a further development of skills and imagination including: colour, pattern and shape, light and composition. Each unit has eight objectives marked for response and skill achieved.
This is a very useful examination as a creative subject to add to other subjects on the UCAS application, but also as a creative activity in its own right and as a step to the higher full A-level.

- Unit Two (50%)
The second unit starts on 1st February. The Controlled Test (exam) is a 5 hour examination with unlimited time for preparation beforehand. A choice of titles/subjects set by the board as starting points gives opportunities to explore ideas. The supervised five hours will show potential ideas taken towards conclusions. All the preparatory work (sketchbooks, paintings, etc) and the five hour test will be marked as a whole.

A-Level (A2) (2 Units) Coursework 50 %, Exam 50%
Entry Codes: Fine Art ARTB3 and ARTB4 (A2 Certification 2202B)
After A/S there are two further units (3 and 4). There are equal marks (50%) for each unit.

The first unit is a personal study or subject chosen by the candidate to explore in more depth. It may be a new theme or more likely it will be a progression from work stated in A/S. It is also linked to a written component of approximately 1,000-3,000 thousand words or an annotated sketch book equivalent. The study of some aspect of visual art that has a technical or theoretical link to practical work is expected. It may be based on an artist, movement or theme.
The second unit is a controlled test (issued on 1st February). As at AS, a choice of titles/subjects set by the board as starting points gives opportunities to explore ideas. The supervised 15 hours (usually in May) will show potential ideas taken towards a designed outcome.
This is expected to be carefully completed after much exploratory work over several months. All the preparatory work (sketchbooks, paintings, etc), done in studio and at home and the 15 hour test will be marked as a whole.

At this level a far more personal response prepares for the full A-level and university, and for some complements Art College Foundation Course applications and Degrees in Art & Design.
